History

Steve is a consultant to Boards and CEOs and the retired CEO of Lake Trust Credit Union in Brighton, Michigan.  Lake Trust Credit Union was formed on April 1, 2010 by the merging of NuUnion Credit Union and Detroit Edison Credit Union.  Steve was President/CEO of NuUnion Credit Union for 18 years prior to the merger.  At the time of his retirement, Lake Trust Credit Union had assets of over $1.5 billion and serves 160,000 members from 22 offices in mid-Michigan.  In the last 5 decades, Steve has worked in 5 financial institutions, 4 of which have been credit unions, and he has been CEO of 2 of them.  After retiring from full time work, Steve has been Interim CEO of several credit unions while the boards searched for a replacement CEO.  Additionally, Steve is past Chairman and Board Member of Mortgage Center, LLC, a CUSO owned by 5 credit unions serving another 80 Michigan credit unions in mortgage origination and servicing.  And, he is a past member of the Administrative Board of the Filene Research Institute, a worldwide organization providing consumer based research for credit unions internationally.  Steve is the past Chair of the Lansing Community College Foundation Board and was on the adjunct faculty.  He has served on many local, state and national and international boards in the last 35 years both as a member and has been chairman of several, and has attended over 1,000 Board meetings in various capacities.  He is a published author, international speaker and consultant.

NuUnion Credit Union, prior to the merger, successfully used Policy Governance® since 2001 and worked with several consultants to learn and refine the model.  Lake Trust Credit Union also used Policy Governance.  Steve has been trained as a consultant in Policy Governance by John and Miriam Carver, and has brought better governance practices to several organizations. 

Steve holds a BA from the University of Iowa and completed an Executive Development program at Stanford University.  His interests include family time, woodworking, playing jazz piano, organ and bagpipes, classic Minis.  He holds a commercial pilot’s license with instrument and multi-engine ratings.
